Recruiting Best Practices

A plastic surgery practice is only as strong as the people that make it up. Recruiting the right people is crucial to building a successful practice, but the task can be daunting. Here are five key concepts to keep in mind when starting the recruiting process:

Build and Maintain Relationships

Building strong relationships with the practice during the hiring process is critical to drawing in the right candidates. While practices are looking for applicants that fit their goals, candidates desire the same. Transparent communication builds trust, reduces misunderstandings, and fosters a positive candidate experience, which can establish your practice’s reputation. Additionally, clear communication allows a practice to accurately assess a candidate’s fit for the role and team, ultimately leading to a more successful hire and better alignment between the new employee and practice culture.

Make Your Practice Stand Out

When recruiting, share unique things about your practice on social media or in the job posting to get more attention and show off the best parts of working with you. This will help you catch the eye of candidates who want to join your team.

Know What You Need

Before beginning the search, define the reasons, both current and future, for the position and what makes someone successful in the role. Establishing a job description with clear objectives and responsibilities will allow you to target applicants that best fit the role.  It’s important to remember that although you have an ideal candidate in mind, being flexible is key when recruiting and to find the best practice fit, since most skills can be taught.

Effective Interviews

As much as you are interviewing a candidate, they are interviewing you as well. During the interview, engage in conversation about the day to day of the practice and talk about the team members they will be working with. This will help you explain the ins and outs of the role. Ask open-ended questions to get a feel for what they’re looking for in their next opportunity, then highlight how your practice can deliver on those needs.

Set New Hires Up for Success

A practice is likely to quickly find themselves back at square one if they lack an effective onboarding and training  plan. Making a new hire feel welcomed and supported in their new role is critical to concluding your recruitment process successfully. You should ensure that an orientation and ongoing training plan is in place along with clear opportunities for feedback. In the end, you will have an employee who is both prepared for their role and engaged in your practice.
